Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten’s official Twitter account was hacked to give away 50,000 Ethereum as a gift.
After first changing the name of the account to “Ethereum Foundation”, the hacker started sending replies to people like Chamath Palihapitiya and Cameron Winklevoss to convince Twitter users to open a fake website.
Jonas Dutordoir, spokesperson for van der Straeten, confirmed that the minister was indeed a victim of hacking. It was reported by the Brussels Times that the incident is still under investigation:
”Federal minister Tinne Van der Straeten’s Twitter account was taken over Wednesday night. An investigation is underway to understand how this could happen. “
The Van der Straeten cabinet now offers its users to secure their accounts with the help of two-step verification.
For blue check marks
Verified Twitter accounts are a prime target for hackers, as the much-liked blue checkmarks add more legitimacy and make it easier to scam people.
Last July, a 17-year-old from Florida managed to hack the accounts of Joe Biden, Kim Kardashian, Bill Gates, and other prominent figures to advertise a Bitcoin gift fraud.
